  Here are a few tips for good email marketing practice:

  • To comply with the Privacy Act, seek permission for communication. Respect your customers’ privacy.
  • Ensure your list is ‘clean’. Have the correct recipient name/ salutation/ company name.
  • Update your email list frequently when necessary. Add people to your email list right away so you do not forget.
  • Take "Unsubscribe" requests off your list. Remove duplicates before sending, especially when sending out to more than one list.
  • Segment your list where possible in order to tailor different messages to different segments. Make sure your messages are relevant and targeted at the right people.
  • Check all addresses that “bounce” (delivery failure notices) the first time a message is returned as undeliverable. It is possible that mailboxes are full or servers are down and although the first mailing may not go through, the next one might. You may want to wait for 3 or 4 bounces before concluding that an address is not valid.
  • Once you have determined that an address is incorrect, remove it from your list. Knowing the actual number of valid addresses you have on your list will allow you to accurately calculate the real statistics and effectiveness of your campaigns. If the number of incorrect addresses is large, this may skew the statistics.
  • Offer an incentive for prospects to sign up to your email list. Free offers and promotions, valuable information or discounts give the prospect just that little extra reason to sign up to your list.
  • Evaluate your results after each email campaign to see how you can improve the effectiveness of the next campaign.
